There are always going to be influences in an American households that cannot be overlooked. For instance, at a very young age, little girls continue to play with a role model named "barbie'. She can sing, dance, cook, clean and manipulate young girls minds. Although once most girls hit a certain age, they are more reluctant to see barbie as someone they desire to be. Barbie has it all, the dream house, the pink convertible, the skinny and tall body figure and of course the perfect husband, Ken. When young girls realize that Barbie is portrayed to be the "perfect" women, they may have a longing to achieve a life just like this plastic mold. That's all barbie is, plastic. She can't deal with real life situations, or speak her mind, but she'll always be a role model. Mattel is responsible for creating this monster and it is drastically effecting young women.
Most girls are introduced to a barbie doll even before they can speak. This leaves little room for young girls to realize that no person can live up to the standards of Barbie. Barbie is supposed to be an older women and not a child so many children believe they can achieve Barbies lifestyle if they begin to act and look like her. Barbie is known for her blond long hair, her skinny physique, and her white body. Now of course there are Barbie dolls that are all different races but they continue to keep the same lean figure. This may cause younger and younger children to be dissatisfied with how they look. Barbie also influences children on how to dress. Barbies ensembles consist of miniskirts, tube-tops, and clothes that might as well be painted on and of course her matching high heels and purse.
Barbie is not someone to look up to because she does not have any aspects of a real person. Her waist is the size of an 8yr old girl. She can go from being a Dentist to astronaut instantly and still have time to make a home-cooked meal for ken. Women are thought to be stay-at-home mothers and cater to their mans needs. Barbie does a good job of proving this statistic. This unrealistic portrayal of how a women should be makes it difficult for women to get out of the mindset that women should stay at home and take care of the kids and her husband. For instance, In the Barbie dream house, there are multiple rooms although the biggest room always tends to be the kitchen. Wow that's amazing! In barbie's world the ideal women focuses on outer beauty and fashion but what about inner beauty? I love Christina Aguilera's song "Beautiful" because the lyrics are true. You are beautiful no matter what anyone says. Ultimately it's the parents responsibility for show their children positive body images. We can't allow toys or mass media to raise our children.
Nicki Minaj has become the new life size barbie. There are multiple references of her talking about how she is a barbie. But what did she have to go through to attain this label? Only a whole bunch of surgery's. From butt implants to breast implants this chick wanted to get her whole body done to have more sex appeal, now she' just another plastic mold. Once again a iconic female artist is looked up to for having curves in all the right places even though she was surgically enhanced. As young girls are listening to her music they can relate to her and maybe even strive to act, look, and dress like her.
There is a band called Aqua that noticed how Barbie was influencing women and made a mock song of how barbie is just this blond women who can not do anything without the help of her "owners". "life in plastic, it's fantastic" of course it is! There is nothing to worry or stress about. Barbie becomes whoever the consumer wants her to be, or in other words who the consumer actually wishes to be.
I'm a barbie girl, in the barbie world
Life in plastic, it's fantastic!
you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
Imagination, life is your creation
Come on Barbie, let's go party!
I'm a blond single girl in the fantasy world
Dress me up, take your time, I'm your dollie
You're my doll, rock and roll, feel the glamour and pain
Kiss me here, touch me there, hanky-panky
You can touch, you can play
if you can say I'm always yours
Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please
I can act like a star, I can beg on my knees
Come jump in, be my friend, let us do it again
Hit the town, fool around, let's go party
